Smile. Take a moment, clear your mind, and smile. Don’t you feel better already? One simple action can have a major influence in your career. In the workplace you are surrounded by many stressful situations and even some stressed coworkers. During the course of a day all people are looking for is a little happiness and a sign things are going to be okay.
You could be the one to make this difference in a coworker’s day. This starts simply with a smile. What consumes your mind controls your attitudes. If you consume your mind with unpleasant thoughts, you are likely to emulate an unpleasant demeanor. I can’t name a single person who likes to work with an unpleasant individual. Don’t be that person!
If you try smiling more I think you will notice a change in your attitude at the office. Be the person that you want to work for. Channel the energy and positivity of the coworker that can always find a way to lift your mood. Team players lift others up. Everyone is looking for happiness. Sometimes it can be lost in the mundane tasks at the office. Help people find their happiness in the office, and you surely will become someone that they want on their team.
Here are some of my favorite quotes from this chapter of How To Win Friends And Influence People:
Your smile is a messenger of your good will. Your smile brightens the lives of all who see it. To someone who has seen a dozen people frown or scowl or turn their faces away, your smile is like the sun breaking through the clouds. (Dale Carnegie)
Happiness doesn’t depend on outward conditions. It depends on inner conditions. It isn’t what you have or who you are that makes you happy or unhappy. It is what you think about. (Dale Carnegie)
I am talking about a real smile, a heartwarming smile, a smile that comes from within, the kind of smile that will bring a good price in the market. (Dale Carnegie)
So what are you waiting for… get that smile on! : )
